The automotive industry has taken a front seat in the news as US automakers appear before the Senate Banking Committee requesting financial lifelines for their respective companies. Consumers who are in search of a good year-end deal are questioning whether or not they should invest in a company who may not be around in six months, much less attempting to get the most mileage out of their own hard-earned cash. The newly launched “Share the Love Event” from Subaru may just be what the cash strapped philanthropist is seeking.

Subaru’s slogan, “Love. It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.” is much more than a mere advertising tagline this holiday season. From now until January 2, 2009, when you purchase a new 2008 and 2009 model Subaru, your choice of one of five participating charities will receive a $250 donation in your name. The participating charities are: the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Habitat for Humanity International.

When a company conducts a charitable donation of this type, they will often cap the donation amount, but that is not the case here. Subaru will donate a minimum of $250,000, with the potential for millions of dollars, based on car sales. Additionally, the donation does not affect any purchase incentives or deductions you have received for your car purchase. This is a completely separate action that only has positive effects on the charities and your karma.

Subaru gets additional credit for making this one of the easiest incentives to participate in by eliminating the need to mail in multiple forms and rebate certificates. Just log on and enter the required information (name, VIN, contact information, and charity selection) and within minutes you’ve made a large donation to a deserving charity in need. Now you can start the new year with a stimulus to the economy, a generous donation to charity, and shiny new wheels. Oh, and don’t forget the good karma!

 Important to note:

  • The donations are not tax-deductible
  • Charities receive their donations by March 1, 2009.
  • If you haven’t selected your choice of charity by January 31, 2009, Subaru will evenly split your $250 donation among the five charities.
  • Purchase Deadline: January 2, 2009
